HEALTH STATISTICS

High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • More than 50 million Americans (1 in 4) and 1 billion worldwide have high blood pressure
  • 35% of all people with hypertension are not aware of their condition
  • More than half of all women over 60 have high blood pressure
  • 1 in 3 African Americans over the age of 18 suffers from hypertension (twice that of the general population)
  • 20% of deaths among black Americans are due to high blood pressure
  • Americans have a 90% change of eventually developing high blood pressure
  • Hypertension is a major contributor to the development of cardiovascular disease, stroke and renal failure

Heart disease

  • 1 in 2 men will get heart disease
